Description

SJ 58 SE NORTON NORTON LANE 6/58 Norton Water Tower II Water Tower 1892 red sandstone, cylindrical, rock faced base of convex outline terminating in pulvinated band. Above this there is a plain ashlar cylinder with bases for 10 pilasters. The pilasters rise to a frieze and frame high rusticated semi-circular headed opening with keystones. The large openings are closed midway by ashlar screens with two narrow arched openings. The frieze has a Latin inscription and the dentil cornice is surmounted by an iron tank with triglyphs between pilasters with arched sinkings. There are decorative shell upstands to the rim of the tank. Access to the tower is via a double door with six raised and fielded panels in an opening framed in stone with an elaborate stone pediment.
