Description

The conservation area is one of great variety. Open space, with several uses, contracts with areas of tight knit buildings and more scattered settlement. Apart from the main road, all streets within the conservation area are narrow and closely confined by walls and/or hedges. Vernacular buildings have walls of narrow, coursed gritstone, and stone slate roofs with chimneys above the gables. A few have three storeys, but most are two storeys, with windows tucked under low eaves. There is no parish church, and it is groupings of buildings, particularly those to the west end of Flatts Lane, which create the “nodes” of the village.
