Description

Description: Bruera is a small hamlet on the road between Aldford and Saighton It is a dispersed settlement, linear in form, following the road. The conservation area defines the central area of the village and contains the church and a pair of semi detached estate cottages. Bruera is a very open and exposed hamlet with views out into the open countryside on both sides. The main feature and focal point is the church, its importance emphasised by the surrounding sandstone wall. This is located on a bend in the road and can be seen as the centre point of the settlement. The dark sandstone tower and adjacent trees forming a fine feature. The trees also enclose the street-space and help to emphasise the bend in the road. The remainder consists of typical Grosvenor estate houses from the end of the 19th century built of red brick with slate roofs. Hedges are the main boundary treatment and are important unifying features continuing out along the road. Together with the band of trees following the road to the south they bring the rural setting into the centre of the hamlet. The moated site within the conservation area is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and in terms of site area is a major feature.
